It was spare, pared back, stark and beautiful work.</div><div>Christina Ellcock's 'Coastal Notes' was a framed collection of mini compositions, including found objects, evoking Dungerness. It was an eye opener! A lovely way of stitching into an image without the sheen one gets with some of the fabric sheets sold for printing.</div><div>I had to buy CMC Gum. Harborough couldn't source it but my friend online shopping got in for me very quickly! I had Khadi paper and scrim or muslin.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5SqEttY1uoeyX-OrJbwsgfn2N5z_-C_rBiGhr-x11tNO9aZPQo9wUjx4_ik_VZkt-uu1lOg-Yr9tZqHIlRPOwnbQ6rcRCNX1qcyhn6jMhKxApzuepI86gjbTRHI9fs_f3fXgsTmWtv0Zz/s640/blogger-image-1059586270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5SqEttY1uoeyX-OrJbwsgfn2N5z_-C_rBiGhr-x11tNO9aZPQo9wUjx4_ik_VZkt-uu1lOg-Yr9tZqHIlRPOwnbQ6rcRCNX1qcyhn6jMhKxApzuepI86gjbTRHI9fs_f3fXgsTmWtv0Zz/s640/blogger-image-1059586270.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Mixing the CMC Gum is the hardest part of the whole process. It must be fiercely agitated as the powder meets the water and as I made a small quantity in a jar I then shook the jar for some while before the lumps disappeared.</div><div>I cut scrim just larger than the paper. Painted the Gum on the paper and then smoothed the scrim over the paper ensuring that there were no creases and that all of it was adhering to the paper. It then needed to dry completely.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfaqlxIb-e1oGVePEfqOVR73KpJnreQRoSdweIQ3ExScPKBvCst7SBPIHOVXxEgJgpknBEWKLZp_1pmAzJno-r7miCNbkEZB78OKYzeI_d0yklZ4kcWaHftIfQm6rLpb_zRpBcT1DV0xZt/s640/blogger-image--243816294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfaqlxIb-e1oGVePEfqOVR73KpJnreQRoSdweIQ3ExScPKBvCst7SBPIHOVXxEgJgpknBEWKLZp_1pmAzJno-r7miCNbkEZB78OKYzeI_d0yklZ4kcWaHftIfQm6rLpb_zRpBcT1DV0xZt/s640/blogger-image--243816294.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I then trimmed off the excess scrim making sure there were no loose ends to get caught in the printer.</div><div>My Khadi paper was smaller than A4 so I needed to tape it to an A4 page so that it would feed into the printer.</div><div>I then scanned the image and printed it.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis0hadqrnWqm6pVCyUy0X1dwXjjTiYHHwjNNBLnwy6ywpAwqND66UgecndB_U98bdBkIprYQpS0Ykk1mx0KU3lCt67hZ_Y8tffaK96Ab5OX9bEoDlo8N8pYruVR8Z83l-bmLxtpaPcQxMm/s640/blogger-image--787493223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis0hadqrnWqm6pVCyUy0X1dwXjjTiYHHwjNNBLnwy6ywpAwqND66UgecndB_U98bdBkIprYQpS0Ykk1mx0KU3lCt67hZ_Y8tffaK96Ab5OX9bEoDlo8N8pYruVR8Z83l-bmLxtpaPcQxMm/s640/blogger-image--787493223.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I put wadding beneath the paper and then worked free machine stitch over the image.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbCRLy7eCuXonCnNsKw4NBYd76ljeGcdhbP-TNqt1dAZfpRXQwAuvPMu_ZghIdsNqj7xvnzwkQ0dFtPkEVhrl-6of4SXJ7S_dVbxxcQPhJLOi-socYMImsdb5A3HR9gJWIJUvmZJjow3w_/s640/blogger-image--947330656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbCRLy7eCuXonCnNsKw4NBYd76ljeGcdhbP-TNqt1dAZfpRXQwAuvPMu_ZghIdsNqj7xvnzwkQ0dFtPkEVhrl-6of4SXJ7S_dVbxxcQPhJLOi-socYMImsdb5A3HR9gJWIJUvmZJjow3w_/s640/blogger-image--947330656.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I'm really pleased with it.</div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3268448154503727698.post-42297774449026561792016-10-13T00:49:00.001+01:002016-10-13T00:50:57.996+01:00Uninspired<div>After working on a series of quilts inspired by the behaviour of different bodies of water I found myself bereft of ideas of what to do next. Such a drought is an uncomfortable feeling. Creating keeps me sane. When I don't know what to create the absence looms large and feels claustrophobic, my sewing room door beckons and then it dawns on me that I don't know what I'll do if I go in. For me, it affects my life, I'm slightly off kilter not quite right. I have suffered this for most of the summer.</div><div>I tried to do something positive, went looking at gorgeous gardens, full of amazing colours, with sculptural leaves and plant shapes, visited ancient houses with stone work and carving, tapestry and ancient tomes, and still I remained uninspired. I even tried to go back to basics and make a traditional quilt top, this too was hopeless, it's a grim piece in fabric that's not really "me" and will probably end up as a Linus quilt. I couldn't even muster the enthusiasm to go to Festival!</div><div><br></div><div>The drought was ended when I spent a week in north west Scotland facing telling the lovely group I belong to that I wasn't going to be able to make any pieces for our exhibition on the theme of Journey. It was an odd saviour, reading about General Wade, sent up to garrison the wilds of the highlands, he first had to build the roads for his army to march on. These constructions passed through some of the finest scenery, through birch wood and over heather moorland passed villages later to be 'cleared' to make way for sheep. I felt a connection. My imagination fired. Three very different possible pieces took form in my mind. There followed a frenzied period of creation and joy at being back to something like normality.</div><div>I embraced the creative process, took pleasure in making samples, trying out ideas, dyeing my fabrics, finding the right threads and an intense six weeks of stitching has resulted in three pieces I'm really pleased with. I think I'm back again, but the acid test is about to happen. What do I plan to do next? I'm really hoping that I can manage to move on to new work without the long fallow period I've just been through returning.</div><div><br></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3268448154503727698.post-15465706439522597272016-04-30T11:07:00.001+01:002016-04-30T11:07:33.669+01:00Threaded Together's Exhibition today<div>This year my work has been almost wholly concerned with abstraction from images. Our exhibition title has been the hook upon which I have built a series of four pieces all of which relate to abstractions from images and recollections of bodies of water and their behaviour. </div><div>I hope that they catch the mood, the colours and the movement of water, it's capricious behaviour and capacity to reflect the mood of its surroundings. I include short descriptions of what influenced these abstractions.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Rufigi Sundown</b></div><div><b><br></b></div><div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf1Upql-64Wh_J-l71dBHBPrVfEFDSpJKycM0nW1t8vMiIqH-wZ5BNN8PJdF0xYtzKrVGnh__XsgEtB2CNSWM1I8rBgyIpS3Q5HP-xDqDfMGNFDzE55dNhhiEjVrp9qzG_0LH1i8D0iHhY/s640/blogger-image-206794794.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf1Upql-64Wh_J-l71dBHBPrVfEFDSpJKycM0nW1t8vMiIqH-wZ5BNN8PJdF0xYtzKrVGnh__XsgEtB2CNSWM1I8rBgyIpS3Q5HP-xDqDfMGNFDzE55dNhhiEjVrp9qzG_0LH1i8D0iHhY/s640/blogger-image-206794794.jpg"></a></div> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">'Floating down the Rufigi Riiver in Tanzania as the sun was setting, listening to the start of night sounds, and watching the ever changing reflections on the river of the decaying light<b>.'</b></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;">Moonlit Zambezi</div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMckaT2MMdja1HNUwQsAgnHCrhg-pHcgwGqwH5wkHeHKI9l6OLHVShXUGy-yR-MYKuQf4zaNvFfjQyXxFoEksOQDLgHD9ZLTWH3p5tE4tPwzozQDsry7ZOc983VqsiLUjKltquYHEFnoBM/s640/blogger-image--989254611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMckaT2MMdja1HNUwQsAgnHCrhg-pHcgwGqwH5wkHeHKI9l6OLHVShXUGy-yR-MYKuQf4zaNvFfjQyXxFoEksOQDLgHD9ZLTWH3p5tE4tPwzozQDsry7ZOc983VqsiLUjKltquYHEFnoBM/s640/blogger-image--989254611.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Relaxing by the side of the Zambezi river just above the Victoria Falls I watched the water in the centre of the channel tumble and race headlong for the edge, roiling, boiling and foaming, while the water near the banks was gently moving its way to the precipice<b>.'</b></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;">Harbour Lights</div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE6P1ct7at6JJ1DnxI9_DhKspCiN_gURlTZ-OzsqtOjRK9yMZJiBaMCr7mP29gC1UY1u5n9qMV75rbFssXrx4Iu40fty3m3-tquxQycVN5ea_6gR12KjrtuzBUU_C8ZJmQ2EE4p71guN6D/s640/blogger-image--1362861047.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE6P1ct7at6JJ1DnxI9_DhKspCiN_gURlTZ-OzsqtOjRK9yMZJiBaMCr7mP29gC1UY1u5n9qMV75rbFssXrx4Iu40fty3m3-tquxQycVN5ea_6gR12KjrtuzBUU_C8ZJmQ2EE4p71guN6D/s640/blogger-image--1362861047.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="font-weight: bold; clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">'A casual stroll late at night by the harbour in Bergen, I took a photo, buildings lit across the water. I was so enthused I made 5 by the end of March! Sadly I made one more and then the muse left me. I tried all sorts to get back on track but gave in. Weak, I know, but my mind wasn't ready to change the theme and just do anything. They went into a box and I forgot all about them. Clearing out, as one does from time to time to make way for new toys, I found them. What to do with them? They sat on the shelf looking accusingly at me and then, when our plans for our Threaded Together exhibition were coming to life, I realised that they were exactly the right size to make book covers to sell at the show. So that's what I've done!<div>Here they are!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8T9Ia63sAfkqguOGwOiMbYZ4iqSF7SyAF_W_H7cnAHuE8ji53UjMr3vJJiQnx5P7SIbjcYXTxgjZgkaxTbF0rUmTiQmRBHvZoAyvNaGFIfyugaPSQNs8bnFQA37ovftrrXNTX660vW5R7/s640/blogger-image-52683471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; On the face of it, blogging is a rather arrogant imposition of ones ideas, opinions and creations on an unsuspecting world! Before I started to post I enjoyed visiting textile blogs, especially of those whose work I enjoyed, especially when the process was shared. At that point I was visiting blogs of those I looked up to. How, then did I imagine mine might stack up? I suppose because I never saw this this as a vehicle to do other than catalogue my textiles journey and <span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">as a means of holding myself to the challenge of developing my textiles in a more systematic manner.</span><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">In the same way I enjoy the face to face contact with other textile artists I like to share what I am doing. Working away in a room on ones own is a lovely privilege but it's good to let in the sun and share the work too. Textiles artists are generally very generous with technique and there are so many ways in which we learn from each other. That at the root of it is my rationale!</span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"> </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><br></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3268448154503727698.post-88576057708469010812016-04-08T10:30:00.001+01:002016-04-08T10:30:56.810+01:00Experiments with dyeing fabric with Chalk PaintI had read that Chalk Paints could be used to dye fabrics, the very matt nature of them appealed for a piece of work I'm contemplating making.<div>I found Annie Sloan trial pots in the colours I wanted.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjezkGtW_9hdUZkqQDm02wzRfcT-7I3LfsuYUVLnX5ReB68_rM1tYIxU2PgLeY-3IlQlY-pz5dpK9OQZ44I0MJbiHBFsoQXNk2-gN0zVBiG9FKYZfCtYcOOenYrbEMjSveljNRjBdkY_v_O/s640/blogger-image--625512035.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjezkGtW_9hdUZkqQDm02wzRfcT-7I3LfsuYUVLnX5ReB68_rM1tYIxU2PgLeY-3IlQlY-pz5dpK9OQZ44I0MJbiHBFsoQXNk2-gN0zVBiG9FKYZfCtYcOOenYrbEMjSveljNRjBdkY_v_O/s640/blogger-image--625512035.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Initially the thick consistency was a bit off putting until I realised that they needed to be significantly diluted with warm water. "6 Shades of Grey"I just wanted to share with you an interesting exhibition I visited while at the ICHF show at NEC recently. Room 6 are a group of textile artists who met through their course tutor Susan Chapman. The group comprises Consuelo Simpson, Lynn Onions, Helen Still, Alison Hulme and Caroline Bell.<div>While all the works were interesting I was particularly drawn to a pair of pieces by Alison Hulme. I'm exhibiting as a member of Threaded Together and my theme has been abstractions of bodies of water. My work has been absorbing as it has forced me to extend my range of skills and experiment with how to interpret the behaviour of water without trying to produce a representational piece. I shall be show a set of four pieces. I'll post these just before the show.<br />
Here is the poster with details of where and when.<br />

I was lucky to get a place on a one day course with the sub theme of weather maps. As a child I loved maps of all types, drew them, copied them made then up you name it I did it. As a family we also listened to The Shipping Forecast, it came immediately before the news. There was something quite exciting about the deletion of these names. Initially they did not have a geographical position in my mind, just the words, but later I realised that it was a tour of the British Isles!<div>We spent the day using the chart symbols as a basis for design ideas.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3V0bia_aDugTScTw-lbQ_gaxHRFLP8zftJichVTLoAoqzBC3mpEdccBtpcYePdXhVlU-IyT8jIQl8_9xjUCKuLRXR7RMwdJkm2CdbNpD7D5DfbezyM4Q1VHxmY5-WsH7Reb7jbkfX2Zk/s640/blogger-image--276955315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm3V0bia_aDugTScTw-lbQ_gaxHRFLP8zftJichVTLoAoqzBC3mpEdccBtpcYePdXhVlU-IyT8jIQl8_9xjUCKuLRXR7RMwdJkm2CdbNpD7D5DfbezyM4Q1VHxmY5-WsH7Reb7jbkfX2Zk/s640/blogger-image--276955315.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyjDNy31y_wyaERVCPOVHmK_Q-6iMYSuj_oViuYi7hJMS2iA37iK3mozsV-Gi6FYgJsNWpletkLwOuFJa_DJlh76b3skYpRQfxuxFkfj8sBRQ0lX_d-D4M0aG2AZXzntps9rb5yB2JYoGY/s640/blogger-image--1692865104.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyjDNy31y_wyaERVCPOVHmK_Q-6iMYSuj_oViuYi7hJMS2iA37iK3mozsV-Gi6FYgJsNWpletkLwOuFJa_DJlh76b3skYpRQfxuxFkfj8sBRQ0lX_d-D4M0aG2AZXzntps9rb5yB2JYoGY/s640/blogger-image--1692865104.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">These symbols when repeated form patterns!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">We spend time investigating the possibilities of such repeats and the isobars.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLpkfIdxWVuoco4IK38ZNoCGnOCqyf_Jm1WwWPPcuBr739EdU5QC-7gOIx9ZpJhRq-dGd0BT9MPxuz4aYZMVtm6Qy85jJtJteCkN_cxnkj0dYGa4iDc02YZy40_p_ihhgeIZvSwf17biYI/s640/blogger-image-1526108517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLpkfIdxWVuoco4IK38ZNoCGnOCqyf_Jm1WwWPPcuBr739EdU5QC-7gOIx9ZpJhRq-dGd0BT9MPxuz4aYZMVtm6Qy85jJtJteCkN_cxnkj0dYGa4iDc02YZy40_p_ihhgeIZvSwf17biYI/s640/blogger-image-1526108517.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here I started to play with a symbol and the names of the sea areas following a set of isobars. A lively and informative evening Andrew introduced us to non hot wax techniques which would be so useful at home.<div>He showed us the use of lemon juice on potassium permanganate dyed fabrics using the metal stamps used in Asia for batik. It produced a delightful yellow where the lemon juice was applied.</div><div>The most revelatory moment was when he showed us how to use Transfer Crayons to create a gutta like resist! You draw your outlines onto silk with the crayons and with a heat source warm the crayon lines, they "pop" and become brighter. The silk can then be painted! </div><div>Here is the sample I then did in a hurry the next day.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEyeHp26Rz_b0UQJKeXfKtEM0svKawLekTXo-40AZy2t2we-kmPlg56fGWL8fJrz3uwDr6Wtwqxap5LY43Se04GaQZPW0P-sxR1_tk_YNxxuR6LFVyUHw8D1vxoNygr3YmDSGIi1lycQHp/s640/blogger-image-67017834.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEyeHp26Rz_b0UQJKeXfKtEM0svKawLekTXo-40AZy2t2we-kmPlg56fGWL8fJrz3uwDr6Wtwqxap5LY43Se04GaQZPW0P-sxR1_tk_YNxxuR6LFVyUHw8D1vxoNygr3YmDSGIi1lycQHp/s640/blogger-image-67017834.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilRLmFJ74DE9Ch__ccB-qeLezPVYVhoVlnNUCpic6tqlRhyNJQAnnAzm1UKYvMZ-KGP-CgQGle2uK3nb-timvtZfmd1xa8jHr902d2ROO1Os2o7FnNHfZUg-T_8jvEMY_4wmXTXbev6yLq/s640/blogger-image--472537608.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilRLmFJ74DE9Ch__ccB-qeLezPVYVhoVlnNUCpic6tqlRhyNJQAnnAzm1UKYvMZ-KGP-CgQGle2uK3nb-timvtZfmd1xa8jHr902d2ROO1Os2o7FnNHfZUg-T_8jvEMY_4wmXTXbev6yLq/s640/blogger-image--472537608.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I then asked Andrew if one would get the same result with Neocolour wax crayons. I had to try!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAs0Iy8CAuzfMrEPU4DXNqYSin5SeT0EyGnE82HUUhv2w34HEiM45sUVibgullPRMLLcquifFUufNGESQAuomlE6Jg9ueN-WklcEDYf3BpXUtNXkCPq7Vz1eBKhxDi7XFPyVH7T-6XdoUL/s640/blogger-image--1767998102.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAs0Iy8CAuzfMrEPU4DXNqYSin5SeT0EyGnE82HUUhv2w34HEiM45sUVibgullPRMLLcquifFUufNGESQAuomlE6Jg9ueN-WklcEDYf3BpXUtNXkCPq7Vz1eBKhxDi7XFPyVH7T-6XdoUL/s640/blogger-image--1767998102.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It does work! I had drawn the lines while the silk was in the embroidery hoop so did not get as firm a line as I needed but where there was sufficient pressure the resist worked well. It's lovely when you have a tiny eureka moment.</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It's been a bit quiet here in February as I have been working on pieces for an exhibition and have not wanted to put the work out on line until the show!</div><br></div><br></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3268448154503727698.post-81442684976008628132016-01-31T14:05:00.001+00:002016-01-31T14:05:39.652+00:00A Travelling CompanionWith this year's Travelling Books each being on a theme I realised that I would not have the opportunity to continue to explore "Marks and Lines" each month, but work on a different theme. My book won't get back to me again for fifteen months. Everyone will be using an eight inch Pink Pig sketchbook to work in. All participants have been asked to choose a theme for their book and to set the book up with source material for others to use to inspire them to produce a piece of stitchery. There was a little apprehension at the beginning as members were anxious about how they would cope. A workshop at the November meeting gave people ideas and strategies so I think everyone went away happy that they could set up their book.<div>Everyone will therefore make a piece of embroidery on every theme over fifteen months. We are publishing the list of themes at the start of the process so that who need to make more than one in a month because they'd be away can do so. The themes are varied and challenging but it will be fascinating to see the full collection on a theme by the end of the process.</div><div>The older I get the more interested I become in simple stitchery , texture and colour. I have chosen "Marks and Lines" as my theme and set my book us with a collection of textiles illustrating the possibilities.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivaLo4fcZ3GhTXZkuspI0FMNCipaPvgMscbuCb0dIds1yoYScYr6aWs-5x7RLm0Od5dtBbrilKuwfm4N6ILzAGLDoBtaho0WSbYyev7gGvZ5Jch3pray_EEb22qJvie_b0CYvqbExuyXnZ/s640/blogger-image-1956980657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivaLo4fcZ3GhTXZkuspI0FMNCipaPvgMscbuCb0dIds1yoYScYr6aWs-5x7RLm0Od5dtBbrilKuwfm4N6ILzAGLDoBtaho0WSbYyev7gGvZ5Jch3pray_EEb22qJvie_b0CYvqbExuyXnZ/s640/blogger-image-1956980657.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii4mGU101kl81_IHvwkbr4PnyGWGCO7tKxJxkhBfudLCR5og674a_hPKnAedOtBvrq8ZuF4FYW_wVWPXZ8GslqzIKk2GKpzX7G3FnqhMpxvqnTssByg0E-uc1ZitBsphrJxURgSWINmKk6/s640/blogger-image-88132831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii4mGU101kl81_IHvwkbr4PnyGWGCO7tKxJxkhBfudLCR5og674a_hPKnAedOtBvrq8ZuF4FYW_wVWPXZ8GslqzIKk2GKpzX7G3FnqhMpxvqnTssByg0E-uc1ZitBsphrJxURgSWINmKk6/s640/blogger-image-88132831.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAoFUyh9pr5OAtJa7H34BH3-SKLzU1_Uybs3Zb6bCfaQC-ZgXc51KR48cyHiEURDy2_a6GP6pEChzofVDrjblx-n_2vsx8iMkOR8zFsEnf71DLV3lwu33E-48Oe_jLQ3bBSeZxgqZOQ_Gt/s640/blogger-image-76639178.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAoFUyh9pr5OAtJa7H34BH3-SKLzU1_Uybs3Zb6bCfaQC-ZgXc51KR48cyHiEURDy2_a6GP6pEChzofVDrjblx-n_2vsx8iMkOR8zFsEnf71DLV3lwu33E-48Oe_jLQ3bBSeZxgqZOQ_Gt/s640/blogger-image-76639178.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1iSoBUkVnjCHxYe7qgcl-zx8TduKct2neADyrKIJDJaIkwjmys1HSSn6aYUdFhWnUfTDxBXweom6Ug_2WBSNQubeF1cmYLJGAy800KVxKuexqpB0lg8PkZGa-z4VP6CgBG5kEGZKXLWx8/s640/blogger-image--544157961.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1iSoBUkVnjCHxYe7qgcl-zx8TduKct2neADyrKIJDJaIkwjmys1HSSn6aYUdFhWnUfTDxBXweom6Ug_2WBSNQubeF1cmYLJGAy800KVxKuexqpB0lg8PkZGa-z4VP6CgBG5kEGZKXLWx8/s640/blogger-image--544157961.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">My own first piece is very simple. In part this is due to another bout of anxiety attacks which seem to drain me of any creativity or desire to "make" anything. I hate it, loath the absence of ME and resent how pathetic it makes me feel. Over it now, but do wonder whether my railing against it is helpful, it's been suggested to me that I have to accept that my mind needs the breather and just acquiesce to the rhythm of it.<div>In part the absence has been dues to a fabulous trip up the coast of Norway from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. The scenery was stunning, weather was on our side, and I have come back with some ideas for some work for our exhibition in April.</div><div><div>I did use some time in September on a hand stitch project which was kickstarted by seeing a photo of a garment from an art school graduate show.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMRTcqcOnuv2DneZKwydUdA2iNirAEpCGvufNnCQQgdSfdTLrEjfHsUdAukJinqRs_19UrbyCvOiJJN175NYPvDWcPWrhZzSB-NWMd17-n5MsoU85jXexFCd2OhSmd6JDM_i5H-Uxpxbgj/s640/blogger-image--408284186.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMRTcqcOnuv2DneZKwydUdA2iNirAEpCGvufNnCQQgdSfdTLrEjfHsUdAukJinqRs_19UrbyCvOiJJN175NYPvDWcPWrhZzSB-NWMd17-n5MsoU85jXexFCd2OhSmd6JDM_i5H-Uxpxbgj/s640/blogger-image--408284186.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I bought an unpromising brown tweed jacket in a sale and set about adding my own take on jazzing it up.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHnOSfI8cIa7QEfAgGihjihQoO6JyN_cqq_vqR4NFmQUae-DoLe72n8_RuFl7BVIS-xDQVG_NpngWduPQcnpqstR9RMJJi-W6prRIYEPJo0Z8RzZg9tQirjik02Z3GtW5HqOQ8-OTxpd4F/s640/blogger-image--1881517498.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHnOSfI8cIa7QEfAgGihjihQoO6JyN_cqq_vqR4NFmQUae-DoLe72n8_RuFl7BVIS-xDQVG_NpngWduPQcnpqstR9RMJJi-W6prRIYEPJo0Z8RzZg9tQirjik02Z3GtW5HqOQ8-OTxpd4F/s640/blogger-image--1881517498.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I started by applying s distressed piece of dyed scrim to the cuff of one sleeve, using fine thread and herringbone stitch to secure it to the jacket. There is something about the heat, the quality of the light, the wide open spaces, the colours, scents and sounds of places we have visited that I find irresistible. I usually find an image, a collection of images and my notes from a place trigger the desire to "make something". These forays into memory are usually accompanied by a trawl through my boxes of fabric. Normally broadly colour related the exception are the African collection which exists across the colours. Mostly purchases from my trips and from Maggie Relph but including regular commercial pieces which speak to me of the continent come out and I consider them in relation to the memory, the photos and how I felt there.<div>This summer I re read my journal from a trip to Zambia and Botswana and was instantly drawn to my description of a late evening on the edge of the Zambezi river.</div><div><div>I was on the shores of the Zambezi just above the point where it plunges over Victoria Falls. Here the river gathers pace in channels, areas to either side remain placid while in other areas the water roils and boils, foams and bubbles as it seeks the fastest route over the edge. The moonlight here, without light pollution, is extraordinary and its reflection in the placid and roiling water was mesmerising. I wanted to try and create an abstracted evocative of this time and place.</div></div><div>I had a hand dyed length from Jo Lovelock and it was perfect as a proxy for the more placid areas of the river. This I quilted as a whole cloth in swirls that reminded me of the moving waters.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1_UfDR9DVn7-LeB1ZJMf5nezb8kEGfs-mWaTVgFYkTz3QiFzN74KuyZ80BYa379SJkmNnDhvPiunRfaQci-b8HkvfzSBmiqqoRSAgt76JYwh1SoNQQ_HLx7eKAAaKsMyaE82Xe3tVRVO/s640/blogger-image-272378120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1_UfDR9DVn7-LeB1ZJMf5nezb8kEGfs-mWaTVgFYkTz3QiFzN74KuyZ80BYa379SJkmNnDhvPiunRfaQci-b8HkvfzSBmiqqoRSAgt76JYwh1SoNQQ_HLx7eKAAaKsMyaE82Xe3tVRVO/s640/blogger-image-272378120.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The swirling waters and the moonlight were harder to conjure. While interesting to see the traditional quilts alongside Kaffe's take on the quilt designs in his signature prints, a case of " plus ca change et plus c'est le meme chose" while more exotic and brighter than the original inspiration pieces the technique and feel was still much the same.<div>What actually blew me away was a single exhibit In a small side room filled with interesting artefacts and collects of materials which had been starting points for his designs. Here there was a printed cotton jacket which had been completely embroidered the fabrics looked like Kaffe's own but the effect of the stitch work was fabulous.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mtoKsw2GNt1FAJY0r1-mIrpO9kkTBeFnQvWSQJDXY2FZoxNVhin8Xbo1hJo-b-QLRvw06Q5xl9M8-rSkMBvcdoKgS-h8E4LJA9iqH2SvMTx33cymJDVYgI7EhDZrkATs-Py5MuYcTsDz/s640/blogger-image--695582341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8mtoKsw2GNt1FAJY0r1-mIrpO9kkTBeFnQvWSQJDXY2FZoxNVhin8Xbo1hJo-b-QLRvw06Q5xl9M8-rSkMBvcdoKgS-h8E4LJA9iqH2SvMTx33cymJDVYgI7EhDZrkATs-Py5MuYcTsDz/s640/blogger-image--695582341.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">On the face of it this is not an outstanding, knockout piece but when you get a closer look and see the stitching, wow!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivTL-Eu9F8sY4Oqej-2HbpO-GB1J8w0D6c12vfUr9VHvS1Db95btZDqH1e3VG5m_VxbypSJ2_Ow6_CjGwBr4fZrB20PHiP4DbQQ8I6RgSGybDcrEf19pqDlQc17XIjUmT2D9DA88jJgCxA/s640/blogger-image--2010698611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivTL-Eu9F8sY4Oqej-2HbpO-GB1J8w0D6c12vfUr9VHvS1Db95btZDqH1e3VG5m_VxbypSJ2_Ow6_CjGwBr4fZrB20PHiP4DbQQ8I6RgSGybDcrEf19pqDlQc17XIjUmT2D9DA88jJgCxA/s640/blogger-image--2010698611.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKX72IJUfiw0fqJsRdG_6UxoEYzVOr2OowvSGeJJ1KX6UmKaudTprmr61ubiB-p0X_3tQgtGuYxinbJiIn2TinWqzUZlRiagI4d5AoL8tXqxYLkzU5UtiN_oYFI4xKbslSWpXNW4dLV2MA/s640/blogger-image-1749199925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKX72IJUfiw0fqJsRdG_6UxoEYzVOr2OowvSGeJJ1KX6UmKaudTprmr61ubiB-p0X_3tQgtGuYxinbJiIn2TinWqzUZlRiagI4d5AoL8tXqxYLkzU5UtiN_oYFI4xKbslSWpXNW4dLV2MA/s640/blogger-image-1749199925.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyYMAZuD6fAs-PrjQWtgT8DKsJvJyyWZpvHN4nw8NqWsMjLpKWkycfXh_aZdKwH8Usg3kHHlkumMguBBb71jh3rDSTx3y_e2EYOG6NI0hGPGjZY0V5OMmoq0kIdXG9zmUiGwiF7xuJLjT_/s640/blogger-image-569979925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyYMAZuD6fAs-PrjQWtgT8DKsJvJyyWZpvHN4nw8NqWsMjLpKWkycfXh_aZdKwH8Usg3kHHlkumMguBBb71jh3rDSTx3y_e2EYOG6NI0hGPGjZY0V5OMmoq0kIdXG9zmUiGwiF7xuJLjT_/s640/blogger-image-569979925.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Now I know what to do with the odd fat quaters of flowery fabric and with beads and wadding I think it could be very effective. I really hope that a CQ member who attended this sessions might put together an article for the magazine on this theme.</div><div>I suppose that to some extent my deliberations have been prompted by my experience of entering a quilt into the Art category this year. Similar work last year had been commented on by judges as more suitable to be an Art quilt, so on that basis, I made my choice this year. If a quilt sets out to be an art quilt how valid is a judges cricism on the choice of colours and on the straightness of a line of hand stitch? One can not imagine this being a criteria for a Quilt Art piece.</div><div>Yes I asked for feedback. I am not quibbling about this, this was her judgement given the criteria. I am however struggling to understand the point at which neat edges or wavy edges, loose threads and way out colour combinations become positive attributes as opposed to criteria for criticism.</div><div>Please do join the debate, I'd love to know what others think.</div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3268448154503727698.post-19842784404652068122015-08-13T11:14:00.001+01:002015-08-14T20:36:08.187+01:00Game of Quilts - quilt made and handed over!Thursday 6th started early, lots to get organised and set up ready for our mammoth day of quilt making. This year the Guild is initiating a new feature. "The Game of Quilts " and as a mad thing I have signed up to take part! Teams, of four, at any one time, will attempt to make a quilt in a day to be donated to Birmingham's Children's hospital. There actually six of us in the team, so we each get a bit of a break from the "sweatshop" for a coffee, a comfort break and some retail therapy. It means we have had to schedule our workload in four sections so when we are working we know what to do. </span></div><div>This activity is open so that visitors to the show can watch and ask questions as we go along or barrack from the sidelines. We will be there all day on Thursday, down by the Theatre area, come and say hello!</div></div><div><br></div></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05122742944781083096noreply@blogger.com1
